Colburn, Alan. (2009). The prepared practitioner: brain-based education. The Science Teacher, 76(2), 10-11.
This article discusses brain-based education and brain-based research and its implications and practicall application in the educational setting. Brain-based research involves investigating theories that have some connection to the brain. Brain-based education is the application of that research in an educational setting. Several interesting factors were brought up, such as the effect of nutrition, exercise, chronic stress, and skill building procedures on the classroom setting. Theorists disagree on the suitability of brain-based research in the classroom as most research has taken place in a laboratory admist isolated conditions, whereas a classroom setting might have other variables interacting with the instructional environment.
I think brain-base research is fascinating but I tend to agree with the principle of laboratory research only being partially applicable in the classroom, as other factors might be influencing instruction. I feel that it is important to understand how the mind works and what conditions help it learn more or hinder its ability to learn.
